Chiropractic care: is it just for your spine?

Daniel David (D.D) Palmer founded chiropractic in the 1800’s, after he claimed to have healed a man’s hearing by adjusting his spine.

Palmer believed that the misalignment of the bones was the basic underlying cause of all disease and the majority of these misalignments were in the spinal column.

Since then, chiropractic has come a long way and chiropractors can help reduce pain and problems in many areas of the body. And with hands on healthcare we can actually increase body function on various levels as well. Here are some of the many reasons why you should see a chiropractor:

Stop headaches and migraines

Headaches and migraines are a common ailment but they are something that you do not have to live with. A headache or migraine can be caused by too much stress on the central nervous system, if the cervical vertebrae become misaligned and irritates the nerves. Headaches can also come from muscle tension or the blood vessels being constricted by the misalignment.

Having a chiropractic adjustment will fix the misalignment, removing pressure off the nerves or muscles and will therefore give you relief from headaches or migraines.

Athletic care

Many athletes, including household names such as Evander Holyfield, Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong praise the chiropractors they see on a regular basis.

A chiropractor will help undo damage that is done to the body during sport, which can be a lot for high performing athletes, and they can also help prevent injuries and damage in the first place. On top of this, they can also increase flexibility which will improve an athlete’s performance.

Childhood problems

Children who have conditions such as asthma, ADD, ADHD, ear infections, acid reflux and colic can get relief from a visit to the chiropractors. It should be noted that these conditions are not treated by chiropractors, but the symptoms can be relieved by removing interferences in the central nervous system, which helps the body to function the best it can.

Tingling or numbness

If you are having pain, tingling or numbness in your extremities, a visit to the chiropractor can remove any pressure on the nerves, which will stop the pain or tingling. With a bit of work, a chiropractor could actually eliminate the need for medication or even surgery on complaints such as sciatica or a cervical radiculopathy.

Pregnancy woes

Sciatica, hip pain, back pain, heartburn and circulation problems … all part of the joys of pregnancy! But they can be reduced with the help of a chiropractor. And even better, women who have been seeing chiropractors during pregnancy have reported shorter and less painful labours.

Allergies

Chiropractors can help with sinus and respiratory issues such as allergies. The immune and respiratory systems depend on the central nervous system working properly. A chiropractor can manipulate the joints and soft tissue to restore the misalignment that may be irritating the nerves and this will help the immune system become stronger. An added bonus is that cold and flu season won’t be as much of a struggle when your immune system is working at its best.

An adjustment can also help regulate the rush of histamine and the levels of cortisol produced during allergy season. Many allergy sufferers have found so much relief from their chiropractor that they haven’t had to pop as many anti-histamines during allergy season.

Joints

If you have pain in any of your joints, then a chiropractor can help you. This includes neck, shoulder, lower back or knees to name a few. There are various manipulation techniques that will get your bones and joints moving and back into alignment and the relief is amazing.

Fertility

If you are having trouble falling pregnant seeing a chiropractor is probably the last thing you’d think to do, but it may actually be what helps you. Chiropractic is not a miracle cure to infertility and won’t help everyone, but in some cases it can be just what is needed to help a woman fall pregnant. The reproductive organs are under the control of the autonomic nervous system, which is a branch of the peripheral nervous system. Overseeing all of this is the central nervous system. As you already know, it is the function of the central nervous system that chiropractic can really improve. In some women, the movement of the egg is hindered due to the signal between the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system being interfered with. A treatment of any misalignments in the spine may just be the thing that fixes up that signal interference, which can help aid conception.

Overall wellbeing

You don’t have to have specific problems or pain to see a chiropractor. You can see one as part of an overall wellbeing maintenance plan. As a chiropractor adjusts the spine and fixes up any interferences within the nervous system, it is clear why some people feel better after a session. Reduced blood pressure, less headaches, better digestion, increased flexibility and mobility as well as fixing any niggling nerve or joint problems will all lead to a better feeling of wellbeing and a healthier, happier lifestyle.
